Mutabaruka)īetween them, Israel's Kalbata and Mixmonster have made some diverse music: funk, techno, two-step and cut-and-paste electronic music. Kalbata & Mixmonster – 'Same Thing Every Day' (ft. From the lyrics, it's hard to tell whether the song is meant to be happy or not – even if it isn't, it's comforting. Van Etten's languid approach in its verses makes the brightness of the chorus feel so refreshing. Sharon Van Etten is currently writing the best pop songs of her career and 'Every Time The Sun Comes Up' is perfect proof of that.

Sharon Van Etten – 'Every Time The Sun Comes Up' A haunting, uneasy cut of downbeat indie-electro. In the hands of Amelia Randall Meath (Mountain Man) and Nick Sanborn (Megafaun), this simplicity is executed with such skill that it sounds like far more than the sum of its parts. 'Coffee' is made up of no more than an assortment of rumbling, chiming synths, a minimal electronic beat and a singular female voice. The breezy indie-pop backing is shiny and comforting, but it's the melding of their two voices on this track, that sound we fell so hard for all those years ago, that is truly extraordinary. Angus & Julia Stone – 'Heart Beats Slow'Īustralia's favourite brother-sister folk duo is back together, and 'Heart Beats Slow' will make you hope they never spend this much time apart again. Vocals on this track are shared between some of our country's finest: Ed Kuepper, Paul Kelly, Bunna Lawrie, Roger Knox as well as young Aussie artists Kahl Wallace (The Medics) and Peacock himself. It's recreated here by The Painted Ladies, a supergroup led by Luke Peacock from Halfway. The Painted Ladies – 'Stranger In My Country'Ī classic song of indigenous Australian struggle, originally from Vic Simms' 1973 album The Loner. Sampling The White Stripes' 'My Doorbell', the song features each member in their finest form and amazing production from the late, great Heavy D. If you'd forgotten just how good Los Angeles hip hop collective Jurassic 5 were since their split in 2007, 'The Way We Do It', their first new song since their reformation last year, will serve as a pleasant reminder.

It might have come out of Perth, but it's world class the powerful vocal of Michael Paolino and the incredible production of Rick Parker (BRMC, Dandy Warhols) makes this a huge, stirring piece of work. Husband plays a brooding brand of Americana that is at its most grandiose on this epic track. It's another well-crafted, nicely polished piece of pop music, but like Lana Del Rey's best material, it's not entirely predictable where the song is going to go next. 'West Coast' is a rather dark look at the party times and opportunism of the Californian lifestyle. Disconnected vocals lay over the top of luscious beds of synth and guitar, and it all changes around so much that, by the time it's over, you kinda don't know what the hell just happened. That's the way Chrome Sparks – the bedroom project of Jeremy Malvin – tends to work. The deep electro of 'The Meaning Of Love' lures the listener into a groove, and then snaps them out of it just as they're starting to get comfortable. 'Henna Henna' sounds like the lead track from the soundtrack of a Bollywood surf film, if such a thing were to exist, with its twangy guitars and Hindi and Bengali vocals. The Bombay Royale are helping to keep the spirit of Bollywood alive in Melbourne. His rich, booming, bluesy voice sounds like it's straight from the American South in the 1930s on this tantalisingly brief burst of gut bucket blues. Archer, from regional Victoria, relies on little more than a simple, rusty guitar pattern.
